Mary Elizabeth Walker Dale, age 94, a resident of Columbia, died at home on Tuesday, July 11, 2017.

She was born on May 21, 1923, in Franklin, Tennessee, to Dr. James Otey Walker and Annie Baker Jones Walker. She graduated from Ward Belmont in Nashville, Tennessee, and received a BA from Vanderbilt University in 1944 and a Master's Degree in Early Childhood Education from Middle Tennessee State University. Mrs. Dale taught at Brown Elementary School in Columbia. She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Columbia, where she had served as a deacon and an elder. She was also a member of the James K. Polk Memorial Association, the Columbia Garden Club, the Quaestio Club, and King's Daughters' Circle.

Mrs. Dale was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-seven years, William House Dale, and her great-grandson, Rory Hamilton Wodlinger. She is survived by her children, Lillias Ann Dale (William) Johnston of Nashville, Tennessee; William House (Nancy) Dale, Jr. of Columbia; James Walker (Anne) Dale of Black Mountain, North Carolina; Dr. Andrew McLean "Mac" Dale of Winston Salem, North Carolina; and Frank Kittrell (Gloria) Dale of Columbia; by her grandchildren, William Palmer (Sarah) Johnston, Jr., Grace McLean Johnston (Damon) Barbieri, Caroline Chadick Dale (Chris) Simpson, Elizabeth Pritchard Dale (David) Wodlinger, John Kittrell (Crissy) Dale, Rebecca McLean Dale, Elinor Lillias Lockwood Dale, Frank Jordan Dale, and Mary Frances Dale. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren,Tate Elizabeth Barbieri, Olivia Walker Barbieri, James McClellan Barbieri, Cecilia Ann Johnston, William Palmer Johnston, III, and Tyler Dale Simpson.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, August 5, 2017, at First Presbyterian Church, 801 South High Street, Columbia, Tennessee. Rev. Bill Williamson will officiate. The family will visit with friends Saturday, August 5, from 12:30 – 2:00 P.M. at the church. Oakes & Nichols Funeral Directors are assisting the family with arrangements.
